St. John’s Academy Students Shed Light on Growing Problem

Bogo Lights!

St. John’s Jesuit students are learning exactly what it means to be men for others, and to illuminate that idea, they are starting a year-long program to study alternative energy which will drive awareness and, ultimately, “light the world.”

What started as an energy analysis in the Academy has grown into a campaign of global awareness. Their research is proving not only the cost-savings benefits of alternative energy sources, but more importantly, shedding light on energy poverty throughout the world. It is a fact that 1.6 billion people on the earth have no electricity. The implications are staggering. Clean water cannot be pumped without electricity. The lack of computers and cell phones hinders communication, education and social advancement. Energy is needed to run medical equipment and to refrigerate drugs compromising progressive healthcare. Deprivation of electricity perpetuates social inequality. In addition, in many third world countries, women and children are simply not safe once the sun sets. The boys were inspired when their science teacher, Dave Nichols, shared his solar powered Bogo light with them to illustrate solar power, so they decided to encourage others to learn more about Bogo lights.
Bogo: BuyOneGiveOne
Bogo lights (buy one give one) are flashlights equipped with a 20-year solar rechargeable battery and LED lights. With every Bogo light purchased for personal use, another Bogo light is sent to a place that is not on an electrical grid. Buyers can even choose where their Bogo should be distributed. While the students realize that a flashlight will not solve the energy crisis in the world, they also understand that awareness of the problems might help spur future technological advances to help those challenged by energy poverty. The message they hope to convey is if someone needs a flashlight, or is looking for a unique holiday or birthday gift, they should consider a Bogo light. By joining forces, their hope is that they can give something ot others, share information about energy, and ultimately “light the world.”

To make purchasing the Bogo easy, a link will be soon be added to this website to simply click and buy helping the students to track the world wide distribution of the lights. In the meantime, the student body is busy working on a series of awareness campaigns to take into the outside community. Their goal is to have these events culminate in a rally on Earth Day, 2009 when they hope people all over Toledo and the world will raise flashlights together and symbolically, “light the world.”

Look for future posts about upcoming announcements and events. It’s going to be an exciting year.
