"World As One"
International Day

“World as One” students Patrick Habyarimana - Rwanda, Lucas Collarte-Abad - Spain, Michael Flackskamp - Germany, Byung-Ho “Simon” Lee - Korea, Jorge Gonzalez-Eliard - Mexico, Michael Erler - Germany, Jae Min Kim - Korea, Hyung-Won “Harry” Kim - Korea, Yoh Kambayashi - Japan, Alberto Merlin - Italy, and Joel (J. J.) Beaucejour - Haiti hosted an International Day for their fellow classmates on Friday, February 24, 2006.

Haitian pork, along with many other diverse foods, is offered on International Day.

The day began with “World as One” students reading TV 4 announcements in their native languages with English subtitles from 8:10 a.m. – 8:20 a.m.

Students sampled international cuisine such as Haitian Pork, Korean beef and rice, Japanese spring rolls, German sausage and potato salad, Baklava, Mexican Candy, cannoli, and churros during lunch 11:00 – Noon.

Students learned about the world around them through presentations by three guest speakers and in breakout smaller sessions with current SJJ “World as One” students along with Lebanon – Sleiman Sleiman (a former “World as One” participant now at the University of Toledo), Guatemala – SJJ students who worked with garbage dump dwellers as well as guest student speakers from the Exchange Program from Brazil, Mongolia, Hong Kong, and Viet Nam.

Afternoon guest speakers included Dr. Jay Nielsen, Mission International of America, on his medical mission to Haiti, Rev. Young-Jin Kim on his prison ministry in Africa, and Jesuit Brother Jim Boynton, who has done mission work in Patna, Nepal, and Mexico.

This is the third year for the “World as One” Program that started with five international students and expanded to 11 students this year. The goal of “World as One” is to encourage students to develop an understanding and respect for one another’s beliefs, backgrounds, and cultures, creating a life-long community that values and continually advocates justice and peace in the world. Ways they do this are by becoming friends with the international students and sharing viewpoints in class.
