Titan Crew

Fall 2008 Season

Twenty-nine experienced rowers returned to the boathouse for the 23rd iteration of St. John’s Jesuit High School rowing.  16 Novices showed up at the Philip LeBoutillier, Jr. Memorial Boathouse in International Park.  One foreign exchange student, experienced as both a sculler and a sweep rower add to the roster as well.

The first week was spent in introducing the new rowers to the boathouse, the boats (shells), the Indoor Rowing Machine (“erg”), and the lingo of the rowing community.  The Novices started their rowing experience with the “Float Test”.   They spent their first five days learning how to scull by rowing in Alden Ocean shells.  At the end of the second week Coach put the novices in an “8”. The experiment with the Alden Ocean Shells paid big dividends.  Most of the lads were able to execute the rowing stroke quite well early on.

The experienced rowers started their fall season a day earlier than the Novices.  With the departure of four seniors, the battle for those empty seats should be keen.  The three returning rowers – Gaillardetz, Konieczny, and Ritter, who went to the Scholastic Nationals at Oak Ridge, TN in the Varsity-4 and came back as the third fastest 4 in the country - have retained their premier positions.

The schedule for the fall regattas is as follows:
Saturday, 20 September, Head of the Cuyahoga in Cleveland;
Saturday, 27 September, FrogTown on the Maumee River in Toledo
(It’s your hometown, folks. Come down, watch, cheer for the local crews.);
Saturday, 4 October a dual duel against St. Mary’s at Orchard Lake, MI;
Saturday, 11 October, Columbus Crew Classic in Westerville;
Sunday, 19 October, Head of the Charles in Boston; and
Saturday, 25 October, Speakmon Memorial Regatta in Columbus.

With 16 Novices SJJ is able to put two Novice 8’s on the water at regattas this fall.  The experienced rowers number enough that SJJ will be able to put three 8’s or a mix of two 8’s and two 4’s into each regatta.

"Row, row, row your boat..' takes on new meaning with SJJ Crew.

Any Titan interested in physical activity, a total body workout, camraderie, competition, teamwork and being out on the water should consider crew at SJJ.
