A highly exclusive group of musicians, the SJJ Jazz Machine is the premier jazz ensemble at St. John’s Jesuit. The Jazz Machine has recently performed at Murphy’s Place, the North Coast Jazz Festival, the Golden Emblem Retiree Club luncheon, and at various schools in Toledo. Instructional emphasis is put on stylistic comprehension and performance, creativity, and improvisation. The Jazz Ensemble is the second jazz band with emphasis on stylistic comprehension and improvisation. |

The Jazz Machine rehearses weekly on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, and the Jazz Ensemble rehearses weekly on Mondays from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
Membership in the Jazz Machine and Jazz Ensemble is by audition only. The instrumentation is comprised of the following:
> Five saxes (two altos, two tenors, and baritone); flute and clarinet doublers preferred.
> Four or five trumpets.
> Four or five trombones (tenors and one bass).
> Rhythm section including piano, bass, drums, and guitar. Up to two players on each may be selected to fulfill auxiliary parts such as vibes, marimba, or Latin percussion.
For membership in the Jazz Machine, students must be registered for 600 Band, 602 Percussive Arts, 603 Men’s Chorus, or 651 AP Music Theory or be a female member in the Marching Titans and Symphonic Band.
