St. John's Jesuit Department of Music
The Symphonic Band
2007-08 Season
Mr. Xavier G. Smith, Director
The SJJ Symphonic Band (Symph Band) is an ensemble dedicated to
performing art music of many genres. In addition to daily class
rehearsals and weekly after school rehearsals, the Symph Band performs
concerts, band festivals, and community outreach events. The Symph
Band earned a “Superior” rating by the Ohio Music Education
Association and earned an “Excellent” rating at state
evaluation. Many respected musicians and community members have
called the SJJ Symphonic Band one of the finest high school bands
in the area. |

To become a member of Symph Band, an SJJ student must be signed
up for 600 Band or 602 Percussive Arts as a class. As with the
Marching Titans, Symph Band is open to female musicians from the
St. Ursula and Notre Dame academies. Auditions are held for seating,
and students are placed in the ensemble according to their individual
learning needs. Since all members are equally as important, part
assignments rotate piece to piece so that students may learn with
varied performing experiences. In addition, all Symph Band members
participate in small ensemble groups throughout the school year. |
