Xavier G. Smith -- New Director of Instrumental Music
Xavier G. Smith, the new director of instrumental music, has been
involved with St. John’s Jesuit High School and Academy through
the SJJ Jazz Machine for several years.
He graduated from the University of North Carolina on a full music
scholarship and earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education
and a minor in Jazz Studies. He was also awarded the Doris B. Johnson
Scholarship for outstanding educators in fall, 1989 and spring,
1990.
He pursued his Masters in Music Theory at Bowling Green State
University. He has taught junior high and high school music for
Toledo Public Schools for almost 15 years. He was the band director
at Jones and Libbey High School.
He also teaches and directs The Jazz Express at Owens Community
College. If his face is familiar he plays saxophone in numerous
community groups throughout northwest Ohio.
