20/20 Jesuit Scholars Program

20/20 Jesuit Scholars Program Success Story HERE

A Proven Program for Success, Achievement, Service & Leadership

Over 20 years ago, St. John’s Jesuit High School started the 20/20 Jesuit Scholars Program with a goal to help under-served youths in Northwest Ohio with:

  • SUCCESS in a college-preparation curriculum
  • ACHIEVEMENT in college
  • And in the years following their successful graduation from college, future SERVICE and LEADERSHIP in their communities.

  • Since then, over 230 20/20 Jesuit Scholars have successfully graduated from St. John’s Jesuit, have gone on to college, are achieving in their career, and are doing service and leadership in their communities around the country.

"If you have a chance to become part of the 20/20 program, you'll never regret it. Being part of St. John's Jesuit has changed my life." - Samuel S. Edwards '14, Currently attending Vanderbilt University

Young Men Who Want to Succeed

They come to St. John’s Jesuit from a variety of schools and from very different backgrounds but with one goal... they want to succeed.

Some have never considered leaving their neighborhood and coming to a private, Catholic school. Those who do set out on a journey that will change their lives and impact their futures.

Many 20/20 Jesuit Scholars are young men in single-parent homes where there isn’t enough money, or even time, to think about how to make the future brighter. Many of them have been noticed by an interested elementary school teacher or a church pastor who knows this young man has the potential to achieve more, to do more, to be more. Many are directed by a parent or a grandparent who is praying for a chance to see their son or grandson escape a life that promises much less than he deserves.

They are academically-talented, under-served students who would not be able to attend St. John’s Jesuit High School because of financial needs or other difficulties.

What Makes the 20/20 Jesuit Scholars Program Successful?

    • A two-week summer program prior to freshman year provides young men with the tools for success, acquaints them with what is expected, and allows them to make friends.
    • A dedicated program director is there throughout the school day to help young men and their families.
    • Continued monitoring of 20/20 Jesuit Scholars’ grades to intercede when necessary.
    • Structured study sessions held in the A+ Learning Center with academic coaches always willing and ready to help. One-on-one tutoring, study guides, and test preparation are available.
    • Programs encourage families to develop relationships and help each other.
    • College Counseling sits down with each family and assists in the college process.

"20/20 is really a family-if I had to explain what it does, that's what it gives us. It's a close group always pulling for you, always watching out for you." - Ronald D. Birchfield '13, The Ohio State University

20/20 Jesuit Scholars Learn to be Men for Others and Leaders

The heart of a Jesuit education is the spiritual development of each young man and growth as a leader. 20/20 Jesuit Scholars do more than succeed in the classroom. They take an active role in the St. John’s Jesuit community, the greater Toledo community, and beyond. 20/20 Jesuit Scholars:
    • Participate in spiritual activities including retreats, liturgies, daily prayer, and theology classes.
    • Perform over 45 hours of Christian Service.
    • Volunteer as part of the Christian Service Daytime Program, in Appalachia, or as part of the international service program. They are familiar faces at Christmas on Campus and Easter on Campus.
    • Lead in over 50 clubs and activities and serve as directors of retreats.
    • Feel compelled to want to help others have the same opportunity they have had at St. John’s Jesuit.
